I did a project about smoking, in which I interviewed some people from different countries who were smokers. I asked sever persons: five men, one woman and a boy of 17. I asked them a lot of questions.
The first question that I asked was: "How long have you been smoking?" Almost everyone I asked said for many years (except the young boy). The next question was: "Do you know what cigarettes consist of and the effects of these things, and also, does that make you want to stop?"
Most people replied to this question that they knew the content of cigarettes and also their effects but they don't want to stop. Some of them think about stopping smoking but they didn't take a decision to stop.
The following question was: "Have you ever tried to quit smoking?" All the people except the woman answered that they wanted to quit and they have tried by stopping it for a period of time but they return to smoking. The woman answered that she didn't want to stop because she liked it. Then I asked the men their opinion about women smokers. They said that it's a bad thing and it isn't appropriate, except one man who is French told me that it's OK and it doesn't matter.
The next question that I asked was: "Does the advertising or publicity against smoking have a good effect or not?" They said yes, except the boy and the woman. The following question was: "What would you do if you knew your son or daughter smoked?" All of them said that they would try to advise him or her to stop but without force and punishment. The next question was: "Do you follow the instructions about not smoking in specific places?" All of them said yes, except the woman. The final question was: "Do you take care when you are with someone who hates smoking?" Only the woman said no. She doesn't care about anything!
After these interviews, I asked some other people who are long time smokers about the ways that they used to stop smoking. Some of the smokers use cigarettes with low nicotine as the first step or try to cut down on smoking gradually. Using chewing gum instead of smoking is the best way that the smokers used and they thought that it helps them very much. On the other hand, some people used nicotine patches or nicotine gums which contain nicotine only. They also use a "nicorette" filter, which looks like a cigarette which also only contains nicotine. These were the best ways that smokers used to stop.
In my opinion, the government is responsible for health education so announcements in TV, the newspaper, magazines and many other places are ways that support people who want to quit by letting them know the effects of smoking on their health. I think this is very important because it makes non-smoking people afraid and try to avoid smoking and all smokers and it makes smokers know the medical diseases that result
